The construction of the “Sheriff” sports complex began on August, 1st, 2000. It should become a base for development of professional football in the country and in the region, according to company leaders plans. The presence of such base would allow professional football clubs to train, spend training camps and hold international tournaments of high level.
The main arena started functioning on June, 2002. The UEFA inspector, Mr. Vertonge, who visited the complex with an inspection in the eve of the Champions League qualifying match, excellently estimated the stadium condition.
Later, on August, 2002, the FIFA President, Mr. Joseph Sepp Blatter, visited the sports complex. He also highly estimated the object being built.
“I know “Sheriff” is young club. I hope “Sheriff” will achieve big successes in European club tournaments one day. Such relationship with football economy will allow the team to reach high levels”.
The “Sheriff” sports complex is situated in the west of Tiraspol, Moldova, and covers a territory of 52 hectares. Today some objects of the sports complex are still building but its stadiums and training fields work already for a long time to the glory of sport. Football duels of different ranks are carrying out here – international matches of professional European football clubs, yearly youthful and child’s tournaments with teams from different countries. National teams of such countries as: Netherland, Belarus, Austria, Latvia, Andorra, Germany U-21, Russia U-21, Portugal U-21, Romania U-21, Israel U-21 and others have already played international matches on the main arena of the sports complex.
Such professional clubs as: “Shakhtar” (Donetsk, Ukraine), “Dynamo” (Kyiv, Ukraine), “Spartak” (Moscow, Russia), “Fenerbahce” (Istanbul, Turkey), “Besiktas” (Istanbul, Turkey), “Twente” (Enschede, Holland), “AZ” (Alkmaar, Holland), “Basel” (Basel, Switzerland), “Dynamo” (Zagreb, Croatia), “Rosenberg” (Trondheim, Norway), “Anderlecht” (Brussels, Belgium), “Steaua” (Bucharest, Romania) and others have played at the sports complex in UEFA Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Cup European tournaments.
Today the sports complex includes: the Main Arena (big stadium), the Small Arena (small stadium), the Covered Arena (covered stadium) with FC “Sheriff” football players dwelling complex, child’s Football Academy with hotel and food complexes, the rehabilitation centre with hotel complex for 60 persons, a gym, the swimming pool with diving board (opening of the swimming pool is planned on December, 2011), eight full-sized training fields of size 105 to 68 meters, four of them with natural grass, three – with artificial surface and one training field with combined surface, and tennis club.
A great number of foreign companies took part in complex building, such as: Canadian “Field Turf” (artificial surface), Swiss “Motomatic” (drainage, watering, natural fields); illumination, sound system and electronic scoreboard were mounted by leading European companies.
The sports complex infrastructure includes developed network of road communication between all structures and has a network of parking.
